Emma Turned the Big “03″

July 17th, 2006

This weekend was pretty hectic.  On Saturday, we had a “kid” party for Emma.  Many of her friends from the toddler group attended as well as a friend from the library and another long time friend.

The kids had a good time and spent the afternoon having lunch, playing in the yard, making hats and eating cake.  A few of them even threw water balloons near the end of the party.  Emma had a a great time.

The next day (Sunday) most of Emma’s cousins came over and celebrated Emma and Nathan’s (her cousin) birthdays.  We had tacos (Nathan’s request) and the kids played in the back.  They had the sprinkler out, the pool, water balloons and buckets.  Everyone had a great time and the day was capped off with cake and ice cream.  Here’s a shot of Ryan, Emma, Bryson and Jaden playing in the water:

Put in a New Patio

July 12th, 2006

Earlier this year we decided to extend our patio in our backyard.  We had talked about putting a deck in but decided that a new patio would blend in better with the existing patio and concrete would be much easier to take care of in the future.

It took a fair amount of work to remove a tree, and then remove many, many wheelbarrows full of dirt in order to get the ground the right height.  Cutting the tree down and digging out the stump was probably the most grueling part of the job.

Once we got the ground lowered, we called around and got a few different bids to do the work.  We contemplated doing the work ourselves with help from my friend Darren, but in the end decided it would be worth the money to have someone else do it.  After the concrete was poured and had a few days to cure, we also did some landscaping.  Katie put a nice small flowerbed next to the curved part of the concrete and I filled in the edge of the concrete with drainage rock and beauty bark.  We are very happy with the end result and are using the backyard much more because of the extra space!!

Here’s a picture of the whole patio.  You can click it to see a larger picture:

Happy 4th of July!

July 5th, 2006

We had a great 4th of July this year.  We started celebrating on the 3rd of July at Brett and Susie’s house on Lake Tapps.  There was a bit of boating, Seadoo’ing and a big barbeque.  Emma had a great time with the other kids, including her friend Maddie.  We got home late on the 3rd and then got right back up early and headed back over to Brett and Susie’s house for breakfast and a few more hours of fun.  Emma made a new friend (Hannah).  They got along great!

We left from the lake and headed over to Polly and Vic’s house in Tacoma.  There isn’t a renter in the house now and both Polly and Vic were up here visiting.  There was an airshow from 2:30 to 5:00, which was a lot of fun to watch.  The highlight of the airshow was an F15 jet flying around.  It was very fast, and very loud!  We had dinner there and then headed home.  Alex came along to light off fireworks at our house for the evening.

Once we got home, we had a bit of dessert and Alex played outside with some of the neighbor kids while everyone waited for it to get dark.  At about 9:30, the craziness began.  This was probably the most hectic 4th of July we’ve had.  There were a lot of kids and a lot of fireworks.  I think all of the adults lost a few hairs, or at least had a couple turn grey.  Trying to keep everyone safe took a few rules.  The good news is that everyone had a great time and no one got hurt.

Here is a picture of Emma holding a sparkler with Katie:
